TikTok Tracking Agency: Measuring TikTok Ads and TikTok Shop Properly

TikTok sells in the feed, in its in-app browser and in its own shop. To keep your numbers honest anyway, we set up the pixel and Events API deduplicated and consent-driven, and bring TikTok Shop revenue into your own reporting. No one-click plugin, and it starts with a free audit.

01 — Foundation

Why TikTok is harder to measure

TikTok sells in the feed. People watch a video, move on, and buy hours or days later, often without ever clicking. When they do click, the link opens in TikTok's in-app browser, and a purchase made later in Safari or Chrome no longer connects to the ad. With TikTok Shop the whole purchase happens inside the app, so your website never sees it at all.

That has two consequences. A pixel on its own will miss a large share of conversions, and the numbers in Ads Manager will never line up neatly with GA4 or your shop backend. Judging TikTok fairly takes a solid technical setup plus a clear understanding of what each number actually counts. Our page on TikTok Ads covers how we build campaigns; this one is about the measurement underneath.

02 — Discipline

Pixel plus Events API, counted once

TikTok's own recommendation is to run the browser pixel and the server-side Events API side by side. The pixel captures the click ID and browser signals; the Events API reports the same events from your server, where ad blockers and browser restrictions can't interfere. Events API 2.0 is the endpoint to use: one schema for web, app, offline and CRM events. TikTok retired the old 1.0 endpoints in 2024.

To avoid double counting, both channels send each event with the same event name and the same event_id. TikTok merges matching pairs within 48 hours and keeps whichever arrived first. Matching an event to an ad depends on the identifiers you pass along: the ttclid click ID, the _ttp cookie, hashed email and phone number, your own customer ID, plus IP address and user agent. The more complete that set, the more purchases TikTok can attribute and the better its delivery learns.

Attribution, and why TikTok and GA4 disagree

TikTok credits every conversion to exactly one touchpoint: a click, an engaged view or a plain view. Click windows can be set to one or seven days, plain view-through to off or one day. In between sits engaged view-through attribution, which applies once someone has watched at least six seconds of an ad (or all of it, if it is shorter) and supports windows of up to 28 days. It is available for sales, lead generation and app campaigns.

GA4 and most shop systems only see the clicks, and usually only when the purchase happens in the same session. Part of the gap between TikTok and your analytics is therefore a difference in logic rather than an error. We agree with you which window drives day-to-day optimisation and which one you use for evaluation, then keep those settings stable so numbers stay comparable from month to month. For comparing channels side by side, see our page on custom dashboards.

Not sure your deduplication actually works? That is the first thing we check, together with you in Events Manager, as part of the free audit.

TikTok Shop: revenue your pixel never sees

TikTok Shop launched in Germany on 31 March 2025. A year later TikTok reported more than 25,000 active sellers there and an average order value of €29.80. Product page, cart and checkout all live inside the app, so a pixel on your own site has no way of seeing those sales.

Since July 2025 the only campaign type for promoting a TikTok Shop is GMV Max, and it comes with a quirk worth knowing: while a campaign is running, it claims every order for the promoted products, organic ones included, whether or not the buyer saw an ad. The ROI shown in Seller Center describes the product's overall performance, not the ads alone.

We bring shop orders into your own reporting, kept apart from website and marketplace revenue and never counted twice. That means reconciling order and return data from Seller Center with your inventory and accounting systems, and watching whether TikTok campaigns also drive sales in your own online store or on Amazon. None of that shows up in any TikTok report.

Why we don't use one-click plugins

Shopify and WooCommerce both have TikTok apps that set up the pixel and Events API in one click. Fine for a quick test, not for a setup you want to rely on. These apps decide for you which events are sent with which data, often load the pixel before the consent banner has had its say, and generate their own event IDs that clash with an existing Tag Manager setup. If a manually installed pixel is running as well, every purchase gets counted twice.

We build TikTok tracking in your Tag Manager and, where it pays off, on your own tagging server, as described under server-side tracking. You stay in control of events, customer data and consent, and the same data foundation feeds Meta, Google and other platforms through the Conversion APIs.

A plugin you don't control decides what TikTok learns about your customers.

07 — Offer

Free TikTok tracking audit

Before changing anything, we look at what is already there. The audit is free and comes with no strings attached. We check:

  • which events the pixel and the Events API send, and whether their names match,
  • whether deduplication via event_id works, based on the diagnostics in Events Manager,
  • which identifiers are passed for matching,
  • whether pixel and server events respect consent,
  • which attribution windows are set and whether they fit the way you evaluate results,
  • for TikTok Shop: how shop revenue currently makes it into your reporting.

You get a short list of issues, ranked by impact and with an effort estimate. What you fix, and who does it, is up to you. We have been measuring ad channels since 2006, and if your setup is already in good shape, we will say so.

08 — Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is the TikTok pixel enough on its own?

No. Pixel and Events API belong together, deduplicated through a shared event_id.

How do you stop purchases being counted twice?

Same event name and same event_id on both channels; TikTok merges the pair within 48 hours. The usual culprit is a plugin running next to a manually installed pixel.

Why does TikTok show more conversions than GA4?

TikTok also counts purchases after an ad view, GA4 only counts clicks. Part of the gap is logic, not error.

Can TikTok Shop revenue be tracked with the pixel?

No, the purchase happens in the app. The data comes from Seller Center and belongs in your own reporting.

What does the audit cost?

Nothing. You get a prioritised list and decide for yourself.
