01 — Approach
Be visible where the decision happens
Local buying decisions happen in minutes: search, compare, call or drive over. The surface for that is long past classic search results. The local pack, Google Maps, reviews and increasingly AI answers decide which three names a customer sees at all. Google is actively rebuilding this surface, from the book button in ads to hotel bookings right inside AI Mode; we track those changes on the blog, for instance in the Google Ads update September 2026.
We have been running performance campaigns since 2006, and locally the same rule applies as everywhere: only when calls, direction requests and store visits are measured can budget be allocated sensibly. That is why we treat local marketing as a system of three parts: paid reach, a maintained profile, a measurable point of sale.
02 — Discipline
Local ads: the channels
Which channel carries depends on the business model and catchment area. The toolbox:
- Google Ads with geo targeting: Search campaigns on radius, places or postal codes, with location assets and call extensions. Details on account management on our Google Ads page.
- Local Services Ads: the ads above classic results, billed per lead instead of per click. Google expanded the format noticeably in 2026, with new verticals and many more booking partners.
- Performance Max with Maps: since the new channels setting, the weighting of Maps inventory can be influenced; the book button via Reserve with Google now appears automatically in Search and PMax ads when the profile has an appointment link.
- Meta with radius targeting: for offers, openings and local awareness, especially where search demand does not exist yet.
03 — Foundation
Google Business Profile: the local storefront
The Business Profile is to local visibility what the website is to SEO: the base everything else builds on. We optimize it completely and from our own practice:
- Core data and categories consistent with website and directories (same name, same address, same number everywhere).
- Services, products and photos as maintained entries instead of empty tabs; a free offer as a zero-euro product works as a lead magnet right inside the profile.
- Review management: actively collect reviews and reply to every one. That doubles as reputation work for AI answers, because language models learn from exactly these sources; our GEO page explains the connection.
- Appointment and action links set cleanly, because they now surface as a book button in paid ads.
04 — Discipline
Geo targeting done right, and the point of sale as a channel
Geo targeting rarely fails on technology, mostly on defaults. The classics we find in almost every audit: the default option also captures users merely interested in a place instead of being there; radii cut the catchment area wrongly; and metro campaigns run without exclusions into wasted spend. We build target areas from customer data (where actual buyers come from), separate core and edge zones with their own bids, and exclude what will never buy.
The store itself belongs in the system: point-of-sale marketing for us means the location feeds data back. QR codes on receipts, displays or packaging lead to measurable landing pages, review prompts fill the profile, and in-store promotions get their own codes so they stay distinguishable from online campaigns in reporting.
05 — Foundation
Measurement: from the ad to the store visit
Local converts offline, and that is exactly where the measurement chain breaks in most accounts. We build it end to end:
- Calls and direction requests captured as conversions, including call duration as a quality filter.
- Offline conversion import: feed POS or CRM closings back into the ad accounts, analogous to the platforms' Conversion APIs. Only then do campaigns optimize for buyers instead of clickers.
- Store visits data used where Google reports it, but treated as a directional signal, not a billing basis.
- A clean UTM structure for QR codes and profile links too, following the conventions from our UTM generator, evaluated in our Tracking & Analytics stack.
Whether your measurement chain supports that already, we can tell after a short look at the setup: just reach out.
06 — Honest
When local marketing alone is not enough
Local campaigns amplify demand, they barely create it. An offer nobody searches for needs awareness first; a catchment area with a handful of searches per month does not carry an always-on budget, there profile care and reviews are the better lever than ads. And if you sell online, local is an additional channel, not a replacement for the funnel.
Where we stand: Before starting we calculate how much local demand your area actually has. If the numbers do not justify an always-on budget, we say so and build the foundation of profile, reviews and measurement instead.
